A good historical view, but most of the information is outdated.10Shooter wrote:HISTORY AND DISTRIBUTION OF FERAL HOGS IN TEXAS by RICHARD B. TAYLOR, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, P. O. Good point AndyC. Then what would you do when they became overpopulated? Mountain lion and leopard have no natural predators. It's not nice to fool Mother Nature.AndyC wrote:Sounds like we need to introduce mountain-lion and leopard into the area...

Re: October is "Hog Out Month - Get the Hog Outta Texas!"
I have read your (it's long) thread and it contains many offers to "help" control the population of hogs. I do not claim to know more than you about hunting pigs. Maybe after reading your thread, I now know more than "average Joe".flintknapper wrote:Read this thread (its long) and then we'll talk.
I can give you no less than a half dozen GOOD reasons why (most) land owners do not allow people they don't know onto their land to hunt hogs.
And its laughable....the thought that the "average Joe" with little to no hog hunting experience would even see a hog, let alone shoot one. Even if you did, taking out a "few" hogs does nothing to address the overall problem.
Flint.
I can also think of a half dozen "good" reasons why a land owner will not allow strangers to hunt their land. The fact is that a land owner doesn't need a reason other than he owns the land and you don't.
I don't think that any of the forum members who volunteered to kill a few pigs think that they will "solve" or even make a dent in the overall pig population. All they did was good-naturedly offer to kill a pig or two for fun and maybe to get some pork to eat. I also don't think that any forum member is naive enough to think that a Texas landowner is going to read the post on the forum and they are going to get an email inviting them to come over a shoot a few pigs.
A thread like this is like me complaining that I own too many guns. I don't have enough room in my gun safes, they take too long to clean, and I have so many 1911s that they are covering up the entire dining room table so there is no room for me to have my family over for Thanksgiving dinner.
Of course, some forum members, knowing I will probably not give my guns away, will offer to take the "excess" guns off of my hands - and I don't need any good reasons not to give them away.

Re: October is "Hog Out Month - Get the Hog Outta Texas!"
If they have such a problem why don't they have cheap hog leases or day leases when deer season is closed?ske1eter wrote:Not saying that I disagree with you at all, unfortunately. Though there are about 9 months that are outside of deer season, plus there are plenty of places that aren't leased that still have pigs.gmckinl wrote:IMO, don't expect to see free hog hunting on private land in Texas no matter how bad it gets. That won't fly because of people leasing land to hunt deer.
If I'm paying money for a deer lease (season or annual) I expect that my group are the only ones to do any hunting on the property (day leases being an obvious exception). I don't want to come across someone I don't know wandering around. Just our group and the land owner/family. Obviously exceptions for workers herding cattle, surveying, etc., but no one else should be hunting. I expect most lessees would feel the same.
Just my opinion on how I see it shaking out.
I just don't like my money going to someone who complains about too many hogs but won't allow anyone to assist in reducing the population. Instead, they would rather hold their hand out for some easy, taxpayer cash or charge a ridiculously large fee to allow others to shoot the "problem".
