It is good to see an open minded person.

We all have made mistakes and still do, but with open dialog and receptive mind, those mistakes will provide a valuable learning opportunities for all.

Taking a blow to ego chin is tough, especially for those of us who are type a dudes or dudettes, but it sure beats the expense, paperwork and a potential cavity search on side of some WY highway

OP may have some regrets in how he handled the situation, hence the post to ask how forum members would have handled this.

It was abbreviated profanity which was deleted.

I'd start by not escalating the situation by cursing at him first and foremost and then go from there. If I perceived that threat to me was imminent regardless, I would act accordingly to protect myself and stop the threat.
