Yeah - my friends do that too...well...close friends. Or they ask if I have "it" on me...and I tell them what I always do "I can't answer that question but don't put me in a situation to find out"

As for patting my hip, mine do that too as a joke sometimes...nobody really knows what they're doing, but I halfway put my roommate in an arm-bar last time he did. He's a little slower to act, and quicker to think now.
