I'm a build it over buy it in almost any circumstance, that said I get much more satisfaction out of something I put together myself. I also really enjoy putting things together; used to enjoy legos but guns are MUCH more fun :)

Edit: as stated before there are definitely uppers to be had for less than you can build due to economies of scale.
