you math might be right, but I think that your assumptions are wrong.AJSully421 wrote:My math sucks... but if owning 8 guns makes you a 3%er... then I guess that I am a 13.5%er then?

another thing that always smells fishy to me is that they use this statistic of "% of the general USA population". It's not that there's anything wrong with slicing up the data that way as long as the results are presented in such a way that they can be interpreted fairly. However, in my opinion, the reason that they use the general population is so that they can present the result as a much smaller number. Because if you are using the "general population" as the basis of the experiment, then how many newborn babies are you polling? How many shut-ins? The upper bound of the data is some number lower than 100%. But when the general population reads a statistic that is present as a percent, they automatically assume a scale of 0-100%.
Perhaps a better number would be drawn from looking at it as a percentage of the number of US households. Because if they called my wife and my two kids and asked if they own guns, they may answer "no" Because they've never purchased, inherited, or been gifted any guns. But if I have 8 guns and we have 4 people in our family I can honestly and with a straight face say that that's just two guns per person in my household. Just two.

not that I disagree with your hypothesis, but I probably wouldn't have drawn the comparison to drug users.E.Marquez wrote:Flawed from the get go...
No differnt then if i wanted to show "Most teens dont do drugs during an avarage high school day" Then i ask them as they are leaving school "did you use an illegal drug during schools hours? Were you under the influence of an illegal drug during school hours" My results will "prove" very few do drugs while at school Or..... will it just point out the ones really high at that time and too stoned to not answer

One day, hopefully many many years from now, my dad will pass along his collection to his three kids. That day, my collection will triple.txglock21 wrote:Eight? I have that many in just one gun cabinet....Er, I mean, I don't own ANY guns!allisji wrote:The numbers don't surprise me. Obviously, they are going after the shock factor of trying to make it look like such a small part of the population who own so many guns. I also agree with Jusme and some of the others who suggest the data may be a little skewed by folks who don't admit to private gun ownership. For example there are probably lots of folks who own guns illegally because of past criminal charges or whatever they would never admit to owning a gun.
I also think that it's interesting that they drew a line at 8 or more firearms. My guess that that would be setting the bar a little low for many of the users on this forum. But I actually do now own 8. So does that make me a 3%er?
