I haven't seen much in this. Looks like a 3.5% increase in property tax rate with no say by the subjects is a relief. My personal belief is nobody in Austin, including the governor, should be there after the next election. I hope every last one of them gets primaried.

The other bill approved Saturday night wouldn’t reduce property taxes, but would require voter approval if local governments raise rates 3.5% or more. Local governments can currently raise rates by as much as 8% without an election.

When they first mentioned this it was a 2.5% increase with no election. It's safe to say the constituents mean nothing to these people.

I haven't done any digging on my county (Coryell) but I have heard other municipalities pay lobbyists to go to Austin and try to take more of your money. That's right, your money is being used to take more of your money.

We are being bamboozled. The proposed bill is to limit the increase of property taxes to 2.5% a year. If that happens, then we get to pay another 1% sales tax. Our taxes are not going to go down.

Not by a long shot. Property taxes amount to more than 50% of all taxes collected in Texas at all levels. Check the amount of taxes collected by source listed on page 1 of this report from the state Comptroller. You might find some other interesting facts about taxes in Texas in this report.

I was way wrong. So Texas collects $112 BILLION in taxes. Roughly half comes from property taxes and half of that is school taxes. Some how I don't think we are getting our money's worth on any of it. I guess as long as the kids have nice football stadiums it's all ok.

If my math is correct, a 1% state sales tax increase would raise $8 billion. If you want a net zero with a reduction in property taxes, your tax bill will go down approximately $500 for a $3300 tax bill. Not very much.

The whole thing just flat out stinks.

I kept hearing on the radio today that the governor has proposed a 1% increase in sales tax to offset any reduction in property taxes. The way the radio was reporting, it would be after there is a reduction in property taxes. How come I got a feeling we about to get taxed more not less? I get the feeling that there will not be much of a reduction in property taxes, just enough for them to blow smoke up our you know what's about how they "helped" us out.

I bet a 1% increase in sales taxes could eliminate property taxes.

Essentially, it says that no taxing entity can raise your real estate taxes more than 2,5 percent over last year WITHOUT A BALLOT ELECTION held on normal election day.

That's fine and all but I want them to go down or disappear.

Is anything actually being done to lower property taxes? I know there has been some lip service but is anything going to happen? I'm pretty sure property taxes were not what the Founding Fathers had planned. How can I be taxed every year on something I bought one time?
