I was probably a little too liberal with my language. The information above is for pistols only based on my experience between 1986 and 1994. At that time purchasing a long gun was the same as anywhere else (I think it was a federal form). Owning a pistol was made as difficult as possible. My understanding is that if you moved from one county to another you had to go through the whole process again. On the plus side, I just checked and my pistol permit never expired! So I might have a loophole if I ever went back, but that's not going to happen.C-dub wrote:It's a real shame NY has become like this. My family lived in upstate NY from 1979-1984 and I had no idea it was like this then if it was. My dad never registered any of his guns that I'm aware of and even bought a couple while we were there. I still have one of the Marlin semi-auto .22 rifle he bought for me when I was 15.rc-mike wrote:Yes, but only their own guns. A pistol license in NY lists your firearms, and those are the only ones allowed in you possession. Anytime you buy a new gun it has to be added to the license. Its a real pain. BTW, even then you can't carry in NYC, which is another permit. The Wall wrote:Can NY residents travel with guns? If they can, have one of your family members meet you at the border and let them carry it in their vehicle for you.

Any idea how long it has been this way?
