Re: Handgun VS Knife

In a similar vein, just last month:

Man fatally shot by police officer in St Paul
The officer “was stopped at the stop sign when he was suddenly struck from behind by another motor vehicle,” St. Paul police spokesperson Sgt. Mike Ernster said at a news conference late Sunday night. “The officer exited his vehicle, and was immediately confronted by the driver of the striking vehicle, and a fight ensued."

During the fight, the officer fired his weapon and struck the driver. The man was pronounced dead at the scene; the officer was not injured.
Friends, Family Of Ronald Davis, Killed By St. Paul Police, Puzzled By His Violent End
According to friends, Davis was celebrating the completion of a six-week maintenance and facilities training course that included certifications just two days before he was killed. Friends say he was respectful and had a big heart. While a community continues to mourn and search for answers as to how and why he is no longer here, his family is on the way from Chicago and Las Vegas to say their good-byes.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation into the shooting. Investigators say there is body camera video, and many in the community are demanding to see it. There is no word on when that will happen.
Neighbors Protest And Hold Vigil For Ronald Davis, SPPD Shooting Victim
“So this is a reminder to the police that, yes, Ronald’s life mattered — but also to the community to keep them aware,” organizer Monique Cullars-Doty said. “Saying, okay, something here has happened. A man’s life was taken and it’s not okay.”
And now the body-worn camera video is out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc7eHucECaU
I put it in as a link instead of directly embedding it because the officer says some bad words.

This is about clear-cut as you can get, I think. The video starts just before the officer's car was hit from behind by Ronald Davis. While the officer is still getting out of his vehicle Davis is running at him raising his right arm with something in it, and is on top of the officer before he clears the vehicle. The officer starts yelling at him and it appears the officer backs up and falls down. The cop gets back up and there's some dancing around before the officer fires once and Davis falls while the officer retreats behind his car.

I ran across this at Greg Ellefritz's site, where he recommends the same tactics I was trained with:

Re: Handgun VS Knife

I dunno what they teach cops, but every bit of SD gun/knife/empty hands training I had spent a lot of time training us not to back up. Psychological aspects aside, it's dangerous because you can't see the threat and look behind you at the same time. And if you don't look back, you can trip over stuff. Training venues are usually flat, but the real world has curbs and hydrants and bushes and stuff laying around to fall over. I was taught to get out of the assailant's chosen kill zone by, if possible, moving forward at a approx. 45 degree either side of the line of attack, or move sideways if possible. It gets one off of the initial line of fire and forces the assailant to re-orient his aim, his thinking, and his body, and puts him in reactive mod.
