John Hopkins medicos figured this out a long time ago. JH was one of the first to offer transgender surgery, because it was seen as a treatment for the patient's mental issues, which were claimed to be the result of "living in the wrong body." Then a new director asked asked a very basic question: What evidence is there that the patients' mental problems improved after surgery? Nobody had actually studied this, so off they went, to compare mental evaluations done before surgery with ones done after. Guess what? It didn't help. The "transgender problem" wasn't the cause of mental issues, it was just a symptom of them. So JH stopped doing the surgeries, since it wasn't treating anything.
