Re: Time for some formal training

The Advanced Training section of this forum has a number of reviews of training courses, many of which occurred in Texas. You may have to dig to find some of them. Some are Texas-based schools, some are itinerant trainers.

I have gotten some formal training from John Farnam of Defense Training International
http://www.defense-training.com/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . He and his wife Vickie are very good, and he does the itinerant trainer format. He usually has Basic and Advanced Defensive Pistol courses at Victoria, Texas, usually in March and October, on the range of Dr Dennis Tobin. I have written up reviews of both in the Advanced Training section, they are a couple years old. His courses run Friday night, all day Saturday into the night (for low-light shooting), and Sunday until about 5 p.m.

I believe he has occasionally taught elsewhere in Texas when someone has organized some students and a training site. I highly highly recommend John and Vickie. You can check the training schedule on his website, and send John an email from his website (he is very conscientious about replying quickly) and he will put you in touch with the local organizer (e.g. Dr Tobin for Victoria). Or if you are specifically interested in the Victoria courses, PM me and I will as well. Also, once you are on Tobin's mailing list, he often sets up courses by various other trainers, like Hoffman out of Houston, the local Victoria PD trainers, etc, plus some informal sessions.

There are other good trainers, but this is who I had experience with.

Best wishes.
