Re: TX: Lt Gov Patrick says not enough Senate votes to pass Con Carry

On April 27, 2021, Abbott told WBAP radio that he will sign the legislation if it reaches his desk.

Abbott said, “Once the Senate passes it out, the House and Senate will convene and work out any differences and get it to my desk. And I’ll be signing it.”
Well about bloody time.

And I note he said "Once the Senate passes it out..." Not "If." I hope he knows something I don't.

Re: TX: Lt Gov Patrick says not enough Senate votes to pass Con Carry

One of the members at Texas Gun Talks says he personally called every Texas senator's office, and everyone of them said they support HB 1927 except

Sen Paul Bettencourt. 512-463-0107

Sen Joan Huffman. 512-463-0117

Sen Ken Seliger. 512-463-0131

who apparently are "on the fence."

Re: TX: Lt Gov Patrick says not enough Senate votes to pass Con Carry

Texas ‘constitutional carry’ proposal for handguns has new momentum in state Senate (dallasnews.com)

Article states this brand new Special Committee for Constitutional Issues is "stacked" with Republicans, indicates ones that support con carry.

"Law enforcement and some gun instructors oppose". Doesn't mention only 55 out close to 2000 instructors.

Says Abbott and Patrick are avoiding saying whether they support the bill.

Committee Chair Schwertner filed his own con carry bill yesterday, which went to the Administration Committee that he chairs. I don't this this is a plus, this just adds churn, especially since it is different than HB1927.

Re: TX: Lt Gov Patrick says not enough Senate votes to pass Con Carry

Well good. I thought in the beginning that Patrick probably said that to put pressure on the other senators to sign on, or at least show them there is support for the bill if they were being cagey.

TX: Lt Gov Patrick says not enough Senate votes to pass Con Carry

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says Senate currently lacks the votes to pass permitless carry of handguns

It takes 18 votes in the Senate to pass a bill. There are 18 Republican senators. This should be a no-brainer.

The way the article quotes Patrick it appears the "law enforcement community" is opposing the bill and has some sway.

Also
On Friday afternoon, one key GOP senator, Sen. Kel Seliger of Amarillo, suggested he may not be immediately supportive of the proposal. He told The Texas Tribune that his office was still researching the issue and he tends to support "just about all" bills related to gun rights, but the "system that we have now works." He said it was too early to say whether he would block the bill from coming to the floor or vote against it if it made it to the floor.
