Re: CHL & Motorcycles

Surgery on the shoulder was two weeks ago tomorrow. Just picked the bike up from the shop (she looks better than she did before the crash!).

Image

I wasn't carrying my Kimber at the time of the crash. I was on my commute home from work and since the company I work for is more interested in exporting jobs to Mexico and India than being patriotic I'm not allowed to have a gun in a vehicle while I'm on duty.

Funny thing, I used to work at a job where I'd get fired if I was caught NOT carrying a firearm...even off-duty!

Shoulder is healing rapidly, range of motion is better than ever, and the strength is nearly there...I'd say 90%. It pays to have a former Dallas Cowboys orthopaedic surgeon work on you. I now understand how those guys can be playing again in half the recovery time of most people. This guy is so confident of his work he even gave me a video of the operation (arthroscope viewpoint). It's way cool.

I'll be riding the bike and back to the shooting range by this weekend.

Who are you asking and where in this thread has anyone referred to drinking and riding (I see mention of going into bars, but that doesn't imply one has to be drinking while there)??? Or are you referring to the review I wrote on Willhoite's?

Re: CHL & Motorcycles

I'll post some eventually...they're not as extreme as you'd expect for $5,000.00 in damages, though. The big British beast held up pretty well at first glance, untill you start looking at all the little fractional bends of the handle bars, grind marks on the silencers, bent up mounting hardware inside the saddlebags, bent headlight housing, etc. Because those things really take an in-person inspection to detect, the pictures just don't do it justice; kinda like my knee LOOKS fine, but there's a cracked fibia inside it that's plain murder when I navigate the stairs at work. Just saw that x-ray today. Also got the results of the MRI that says my right rotator cuff is fifty percent torn through.

But don't tell Robin. She'll insist I get that fixed before I go to the range again (or ride the R3)...and there's a sweet Kimber Crimson Carry Pro under the tree for her this Christmas. I want to take her to the range the first weekend after Christmas to start breaking it in and get those laser grips aligned.

A Bit of Eyebrow Surfing

Judging from the way my blackberry bruised my right hip and my Motorola Droid bruised my left hip when I crashed two weeks ago, I'm REALLY glad some wiser folks convinced me to stop carrying my 1911 on my body while riding. If I'd been wearing that little anvil in my shoulder rig I'd certainly have some broken ribs.

The whole story is at A Perfectly Executed High-Side.

Re: CHL & Motorcycles

Hey guys, sorry for the long absence...the weather's been nice up until the last several days and I haven't been able to keep away from the twisties. I finally settled on keeping the Kimber in my tank bag and just taking the bag with me anytime I dismount. Not as convenient as having it in an IWB or shoulder rig, but better than not having it at all or having it driven into my body like the head of a mallet in the event of a crash.

We need a special section on the CHL forums for us bike riders to plan combo rally rides to the gun ranges. There's a lot of nice twisty roads and hills between, say, Elm Fork in Irving and that little range down around Friendswood...

Maybe something like a poker run only using our targets from each range instead of cards.

Re: CHL & Motorcycles

Check it out! I got my bike early. Picked her up at EuroSport Cycle in Ft. Worth and rode it home today. Nowhere on this bike to stash a gun. Hafta get some luggage.

Didn't think about the third kind when I wrote Two Kinds of Motorcycle Riders.

Excellent points. I can't conceive of any scenario where I'd be trying to draw and shoot from a moving bike. Even the most sluggish of bikes commonly on the road today will speed you out of trouble's range in the blink of an eye. The closest I can come to a real need to have the gun strapped to my body would be if I was purposely run down by a cager while on my bike and got flung off it. If the assault continued, I'd be defensless with the gun out of reach on the bike.

Then again, as you said, it's probable that a violent crash would separate the gun from me anyway.

On top of all that, I'll be riding a Triumph Rocket III, so I can probably outrun most bullets.

Re: CHL & Motorcycles

Wow. Thanks for that, Richard.

It made me a believer. Guess I'll be ordering myself a crossbreed supertuck now. I really like my Galco "donkey" shoulder rig, but after reading that story It just ain't worth it on the bike.

It's too bad there's not something you could mount concealed on the bike that would be easily transferable to concealed carry (without unconcealing during the transfer) upon dismount.

That appears to be a V8 below the tank. Is that a Boss Hog custom, or a photoshop job?

Re: CHL & Motorcycles

"rlol" I saw that amazing piece of viral marketing awhile back and embedded it on my personal web site. Gotta wonder if Triumph roped in some old Monte Python writers to help out with it.

Re: CHL & Motorcycles

By November 4 I will be the proud owner of a Triumph Rocket III.

Image

I'll probably be joining up with a few old buddies, but anyone I ride with is going to know I'm CHL and be aware that I won't go into a 51% or 30.06 posted establishment. Shouldn't be a problem since my brother is CHL and most of my buddies are either CHL, former, or current LEO.

I'm thinking in the rare event I do have to disarm I'll just find some cover to do it in, wrap it up in a towel or do-rag, and return to the bike to drop it in the saddlebag. People may think I'm sneaking off to smoke crack or something, but that's better than some crook seeing me stick a thousand dollar piece of hardware in my saddle bag and walking away.

But I would like to know what specific carry rigs might be on the market for motorcyclists, if anyone has any info to share.

I'm thinking my current shoulder rig for the 1911 would be pretty uncomfortable under a leather bike jacket...and not too crazy about the SmartCarry rig while sitting on a bike for two-hundred miles, either.

Maybe I should just duct tape it between my shoulder blades ala Bruce Willis in the first "Die Hard" movie! :rolll
