Tired, old, and not necessarily true argument. My CHL instructor was pretty clear on how to handle police response when you're a CHL holder and in the middle or aftermath of an incident. Not getting shot by the good guys is mostly a matter of exercising common sense.RiveraRa wrote:...He said that if the cops show up for an active shooter situation and you have a gun in your hand then they will shoot you. He also said that the avg CHL holder qualifies once. SWAT team qualifies twice a month or something like that...
The average law abiding citizen will believe just about anything a LEO tells them until they are given proof otherwise. As a former veteran police officer, I know that just having a badge to go along with your gun does not make you a better marksman. As a former police officer who routinely burned 300+ rounds at the range almost every workday after shift I know that no one else in my department shot that much, but a few of them were still better than me. Most of them, however, only fired practice rounds once a year at qualification time. I'm sure the law requires qualification more often now, but back when I was a cop (1987-1995) the test wasn't any more difficult that the shooting exam for CHL is today.
Needless to say, most of the guys I worked with were lousy shots, to say the least. On the other hand, every one of them were as dependable as steel, and none shirked at wading into a fight. I had the highest regard for my fellow officers, and I still respect and admire all that the LEOs do for us in this country.
Back when I was an officer, every street cop in the department was pro-concealed carry for civilians. Most of the brass was on the other side. Nowadays the patrol officers I meet seem to be divided almost 50/50 on the subject, but I'm in the big city and I guess the influence of the national liberal chiefs' organization has a little more sway.
The best way to place your side of the argument would be to find a respected law enforcement officer who shares your opinion on the matter and get him/her to make the argument along with you, and have the facts at hand as others have already stated. The individual you need may just be a member on this forum. The weight of that first guys badge is not going to be easy to lift without the weight of another badge to level it out.
