I had a similar issue with the "Lonesome Dove" mini-series. The first time I watched it, I was expecting a western and was very disappointed. Later, I realized it was a Shakespearean tragedy. Watched it again and thoroughly enjoyed it.MaduroBU wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 11:55 amSometimes allegory gives the viewer a better picture of something than the simple facts. As a retelling of the life of Commodus, Gladiator was horrible. As a look into an 800 year struggle between imperial tyranny and SPQR, the movie belongs with Seutonius and Polybius.Thought it would be more historical and less allegorical.
I'm still working on my ability to willing suspend disbelief.
