Sometimes allegory gives the viewer a better picture of something than the simple facts. As a retelling of the life of Commodus, Gladiator was horrible. As a look into an 800 year struggle between imperial tyranny and SPQR, the movie belongs with Seutonius and Polybius.
I had a similar issue with the "Lonesome Dove" mini-series. The first time I watched it, I was expecting a western and was very disappointed. Later, I realized it was a Shakespearean tragedy. Watched it again and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm still working on my ability to willing suspend disbelief. :biggrinjester:

Nice scene. I was disappointed by the movie. Thought it would be more historical and less allegorical.
