The Commander length 1911s are much more reliable than the compact and sub-compact models. That said, I'm not sure how much benefit a 3/4" shorter barrel and slide are compared to the loss in velocity. I'm average height (5'8" - 170lbs) and have no problem carrying a full size 1911.
P.S. Nice Esmeralda grips on that second Smith, SecurityGeek. Is that bonded ivory? Also, is that a Gunsite Colt Commander with S&W grips on it?
