I decided that I wanted to dry fire a dozen or so times before I started shooting. .

I understand dry fire practice at home but why at the range?
Dry firing between live firing is an excellent way to reinforce proper habits, and also to calm down if you catch a flinch or jerk at the range. I know some trainers recommend five dry shots for each live shot.
