I'm from the Austin area and can't really help you with finding a good instructor in Lubbock.

But I fully agree with your desire to find a good instructor. What a good instructor does is make the class interesting and dispense accurate information about CHL law and use of force law.

As for the shooting part of it, don't worry about it. It's like a driving test. Everyone passes. You won't need any indulgence on the part of the instructor.

The whole course is pretty easy actually.

If you're not too familiar with handguns, I would advise getting some instruction as to safe handling both at home and at the range. The CHL course assumes you know this stuff (even though many people taking the course do not).
