IIRC, the GCA 1968 made maintaining records illegal.
Sure it did. We all know that the fed.gov lives by the rule of law.

The bill will not create a national registry; in fact, it specifically makes it illegal to establish any such registry.

If anyone here thinks that any new legislation is going to be followed to the letter of the intent of the law they are sadly mistaken. No matter how many safeguards are legislated, there will be factions in the fed.gov who will ignore the law and do what they want.

All you have to do is look at their leadership and those in power and you have your answer.

Furthermore, if you think that passing a measly new concession for more background checks is going to satisfy their lust in their quest for ultimate registration and confiscatio then you are delusional to the extreme.

In my world, if chucky schumer is not screaming in anger about the legislation then we are screwed. In other words, his stated optimism about breakthroughs leaves me with a sinking feeling.

The GOP will save us.
