In the original incident, did the rolling mob know some of their group had those jobs? Was that one of the reasons they acted like the law didn't apply to them?

I don't know but I bet it has something to do with mindset and culture. In places like The South, the locals might not be shy about using their pickup trucks to teach punks some manners. And if they pick on granny in her Buick, some of her neighbors might be gentlemen and protect her.
