Obtaining the criminal record can be difficult if one lived in different cities because you have go to each cities administration and get the record for the time you lived there. They also consider certain traffic violations as a crime.
In other terme, it is not so easy because of the difficulties implied. they usually ask for 10 years but in case ther was an issue before those 10 years they'll deny the application without explanation.

The "Gas Pistole" or also called "Schreckschuss Waffe" was legal to purchase for anybody at the age of 18 or older in Germany before they changed the law several years ago.
It is not useful for protection at all because you may expose yourself to the "gas" in a close encounter.
To obtain a "Kleinen Waffenschein" over there is by far more difficult than getting a CHL in the U.S.
