Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools

Well, I guess I have a different opinion than you JMRA and that's ok.

My kids grew up on military bases around the world, they are used to seeing exercises all the time and have even experienced threatcon delta. They're used to seeing full gear including chem warfare suits. We've unknowingly participated in the exercises. We drove around on base and forgot the exercise was going on that day until the car in front of us got taken down by SP's. Kids adapt well to different scenarios, ALL kids, no, but in my opinion most do. If this program was enacted as a school wide program as they do for drunk driving called Shattered Dreams, then it would be necessary to protect those special needs students or sensitive students from exposure to this in the same way, as they do in this program.

Sadly, the school shooting or mass shooter scenario is becoming a common thing, we've got to prepare ourselves and our children. Since you and I both do, what about the parents that don't?

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools

I think it's a fantastic idea, as long as everyone participating knew it was a drill in adavance. I believe this is good for the students to hear what gun shots sound like in a school environment, so that they KNOW what they're hearing if it does happen. Too many times people freeze and try and rationalize what they thought they heard, some say firecrackers, a desk dropping, etc. People come up with weird ideas. If this can get them to react faster instead of freezing, then why not? In this training, they can use it in other situations such as movie theater or the mall. They are not going to be traumatized, they've seen worse in scary movies or on The Walking Dead, or in their video games.

I believe in teaching my kids about school safety and what to do in case... We've discussed this often. Kids need this training. Not all parents teach or expose their kids to gun safety & shooting, as most of us have taught our own. Our kids know what gun shots sound like. It's always better to be prepared.
