Its not the pistol in the holster (it wasn't for me anyway). Its the pistol falling from the holster, or out of your hand, or an accidental discharge when you draw it.
No modern handgun should be capable of firing due to being dropped. Look for an internal safety that prevents the striker (or hammer) from working unless the trigger has been pulled. If your gun doesn't have one, get a new gun.
You're assuming something doesn't snag the trigger on the way down, but you're right on the landing part. However, things can and do happen. Some dude popped a round in the lobby of the shootin' range last night, thinking he had cleared his pistol. BANG instant test on who of us are deaf or not...

Re: Got Over Fear of Carry with One down the Pipe

1) Pull the trigger then lie about it.
Yep. Hwoever its still fired. Training and practice can reduce this risk to immateriality with a non modified trigger. its one reason I play the weekend IDPA hack, and have also kept my CC piece at its stock 6.5lb pull. Inversely seeing two "expert" level 1911 shooters get jingled up in one way or another thumbing their active safeties are a big reason I switched to a DOA only piece despite my preference.
2) Grab for the dropped gun and perhaps pull the trigger.
Yep, I'd also proffer the trigger getting snagged by something else on the way day or when it lands.

Both of these are why I personally like a grip safety but your mileage may vary. Of course my CHL is an M&Pc so I guess my mileage varied too. ;-)

Modern handguns are designed so that they can only fire if the trigger is pulled.
Agreed, which is why when I dropped my shiny uber 1911 and screamed like a little girl (my daughter hates it when I say that) it wasn't because i was worried it would go off but because I worried I just broke my shiny toy... :cryin

However NDs can happen if "the pistol falling from the holster, or out of your hand, or an accidental discharge when you draw it."
The number of unintentional discharges by police and others show it does occur. Glock leg is not just a myth.

Now good training and good gear (in that order), and a good routine will help a lot of that, but there's a reason the old man taught me to keep the safety on when moving around with a rifle. Unforseen things can and do happen.

Also a healthy respect that mechanical devices can and do fail.
Initially I had a 1911. I managed to overcome my fears by CCing a week with it cocked and locked but no round in the chamber. Although the safety came undone a few times with one holster it was reassuring (a long thumb safety is not necessarily a good thing without the proper holster).

Now I have an M&P with one in the pipe. I still would like a grip safety or active safety for the times I take it out of the holster to transfer to something else, as I have dropped a pistol before. but when its in holster I feel just fine. The holster is stiff kydex and intentionally very stiff to draw from to avoid accidental slippage. So I am good there.
