I don't know but I bet it has something to do with mindset and culture. In places like The South, the locals might not be shy about using their pickup trucks to teach punks some manners. And if they pick on granny in her Buick, some of her neighbors might be gentlemen and protect her. However, in yankee metro areas like NYC and DFW, the locals don't feel that social obligation.

Another factor is those bikers in NC probably knew who fathered them.
Perhaps you missed all the coverage during 9/11/01 in NY and DC. I found it quite a show of ordinary folks helping ordinary folks in the most horrific of circumstances.
Perhaps he understands the difference between dealing with bad guys, and picking up the pieces of their victims afterward. Both acts are noble but they are different.
