I belong to a private club. It's near my home. I can shoot any time or day. If I'm the only one there, I can do whatever I like (set up multiple targets, etc.) . And it's cheap. However, it has limited facilities, and there's at least one loose cannon who makes me nervous.
Public ranges usually cost more, have better facilities, and are run by people who enforce compliance with the rules.

But, if you shoot a lot, a private range is generally cheaper in the long run. I belong to DPC. After one time charge of $200 and $150 per year, you shoot as much as you like for free. DPC is about 1/2 mile from my office so I go at lunch 2-3 times a week. Saved me a bunch of $$$
