I don't think it is fair the we need to use weapons to defend ourselves, but that is the world we live in and as far as human behavior is concerned, it seems to have always been that way. Most of us do not have any plans to attack another, but we need to be able to defend ourselves and loved ones from the deviants that do attack others. The older I get, the more I realize that I do not have a hankering for violence, so I will stop the threat anyway I can and as swiftly as I can. My intent is never to make the attacker's body to assume room temperature, but if that happens in the course of stopping the threat, then so be it.
