posting.php?mode=post&f=8
During the first portion, I will be covering the material from the presentation AND guiding you through the drills so that you can internalize the method and prove to yourself that it works.
Avoiding Criminal Attacks and Knife Defense with Herb Martin. This course will consist of two parts.
The first "Avoiding Criminal Assaults" will give you the knowledge and skills to defuse 85% of criminal assaults BEFORE they happen. Sometimes being alert isn't enough. Students will learn a simple and effective standardized procedure for what to do AFTER they have been chosen as a victim but BEFORE the attack actually happens.
The second part, "Knife Defense: Connectivity and Disarms", students will learn to significantly improve their ability to respond effectively to sudden knife attack and be introduced to the Austin Combatives Method of knife defense. This class is appropriate for all skill and ability levels.
If you don't like *MY* classes then check out the announcement page and find one of the others that does suit you.

Re: Avoiding Criminal Assaults -- Presentation at 17th TCHA
My be my fault, I will go check it now.
It's fixed not (I believe); it wasn't actually my fault, but apparently Google Drive got confused when I moved some OTHER files.
Thanks for pointing it out before more people were frustrated.

Re: Avoiding Criminal Assaults -- Presentation at 17th TCHA
Thank you. Glad you liked that.SQLGeek wrote:Excellent presentation, thank you for sharing the material. I like that you dedicated a few slides to OSA.
That part seemed well received at the conference when it was given live.
A larger number of attendees were older, heavier men like me, and while women, younger folks, and the trim can certainly get OSA as well, this put the audience like me in the highest risk factor pool.
My goal was to seriously help everyone SAVE SOME LIVES, both their own, the family, their friends, and their students, and I really didn't care HOW we did that.
Avoiding Criminal Assaults is one way -- getting people the medical treatment they need is another.
( I am reviewing the presentation for more typos. Thanks)

Re: Avoiding Criminal Assaults -- Presentation at 17th TCHA
If any of you folks get near Austin, you are welcome to attend our http://www.Meetup.com/AustinCombatives" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (see schedule or CALL me as I love to practice.)
We work on this material and especially on "Accessing" our firearm or other weapons (including RUNNING AWAY) when under attack.
We work soft (down to no contact and just the Back Off! and some simple defensive measures) or hard (up to full opposition) depending on what YOU are prepared to do so we are suitable for those who don't like martial arts or those who want to test out their full skills.
It is surprisingly hard to get your gun out (despite what you have been led to believe) when under IMMEDIATE PHYSICAL attack or even just pressure, so we will help you work through this to find ways to GAIN TIME AND SPACE to access your firearm.
Come visit us, it's always free to try and that means if you are from out of town there isn't going to be any charge. (Our regular members pay $40/mo to the HOST gym after the first couple of sessions.)
We would love to meet you and you are welcome as my guests.....

Re: Avoiding Criminal Assaults -- Presentation at 17th TCHA
Ultra,
Excellent attitude -- many people find it difficult to be as open minded as you on realizing there might be more to thinking these situations through.
A big part of this work is PRACTICE.
In teaching this material, we do scenarios where the "bad guy" actively tries to trick the defender into "engaging" or otherwise letting him approach (we do this after people demonstrate the basic idea.)
It is surprising to see how DIFFICULT something SO SIMPLE is to do when confronted by even a mock threat.
What this means is that most people are going to be in even worse shape if the threat is real.
We really want our "threat avoidance" efforts to go onto AUTOPILOT so our brain is free to THINK and PLAN how the heck to get out of there.
Even little things like saying, "Hey man, I said Back off" dilute the effect so much that it is hard to believe.
Once someone knows the method PERFECTLY, and PRACTICES it that way, they are beginning to be qualified to know HOW and WHEN to break the rules and do something "extra".
For my part I always review every deviation that I make from the Back Off sequence to determine if that was done SMART or SLOPPY.
Smart can be very good; sloppy is almost always dangerous.
Thanks for the kind words.

Re: Avoiding Criminal Assaults -- Presentation at 17th TCHA
Thanks for the heads up -- I fixed the (most egregious) spelling errors and appreciate that you took the time to read it carefully enough to notice them.
Thanks, and please let me know if you find more errors or have other suggestions.
