Re: Migration to VirtBiz Complete
Hi OldCannon. Yes, I think I understand what you're saying. Sorry if I was unclear. I mean that it could have something to do with the URL used by the last person to post, which would then trigger the URL as a string in the email. phpBB is far from my specialty, but it's a theory I had. Could be right, could be wrong. ;)

Re: Migration to VirtBiz Complete
This may also depend on the URL that was used to post. It's possible that some users may still be coming in using that temporary IP-based link. I don't recommend that, since it was a temporary measure and will most likely be deactivated soon. In other words, I would encourage users/posters to be using the texaschlforum.com URL and not one with an IP address in it.OldCannon wrote:Odd, my subscription emails are starting to use IP addresses like this:

I think something got broke. Was working correctly last night.

Re: Migration to VirtBiz Complete
Hey RX8er, I think you should find now that the issue was cleared up. There's a long explanation that our Support guys found and I won't go into repeating it but the bottom line is the images had been corrupted in the transfer and that it should be corrected now. If you go to a page that had a problem before, it may be necessary for you to CTRL-F5 to bypass the cache, but once you do that, the images will pop up like normal again.RX8er wrote:I think I may have discovered an issue. It seems that I can no longer open images that were added as attachments to posts. here are a couple sites:

download/file.php?id=4034&mode=view" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Migration to VirtBiz Complete
We started life as a web hosting company, but we've morphed into so much more. Consequently, the whole website for online sales and whatnot has really taken a back seat. Our own website basically dates back to when we popped in a shiny new PowerEdge 1650. For those of you not familiar, that's now a pretty ancient little box. Think Pentium III. That's about the last time we actually touched our own site.92f-fan wrote:Interesting - Glad to see the site got more performance for less $$
I was looking for more details since Im considering moving my dedicated server from an out of state provider
Found these things on the vertbiz website:
The site is really slow.
Almost no details of what is included with the servers. Info on bandwidth, support, backup services available, options for SSD drives. etc
Once in the cart all the other non cart links dont work - the contact us link, support link - the faq link - both in the header and the footer, seems the cart ignores them. Tried 3 different browsers.
Prices seem good and I like supporting a fellow gun enthusiast but
these issues dont give me a warm fuzzy
Maybe they sell mostly on the phone. But isnt that kinda ironic for a hosting company ?
The bulk of our business now comes from dedicated servers, managed services and server colocation, which isn't something most folks tend to buy online. We're a boutique, and consequently the services we provide are usually customized to a client. The hosting for this site is an example. We have some neat plans to significantly upgrade our own online presence, but honestly we haven't been hurting for business (a good problem to have), so it hasn't been a big priority. Is it the right answer? Not necessarily. But it's the honest one.
Thanks for the opportunity to respond!

<snark> Media Temple is a good company. Their former customers tell me so. Let me know when you're ready to save some $$ on that Plesk box.The Annoyed Man wrote:ChrisFromDallas, thanks for the answer. I lease my current server from MediaTemple, and it comes with the Parallels Plesk Panel 11.0 interface pre-installed. I've had cPanel experience, but no BlueOnyx experience; but between Plesk and cPanel, I MUCH prefer Plesk.

I agree that Plesk is a more attractive interface. My only reservation is that Parallels seems to treat production releases like betas. The latest update will invariably break something that worked just fine before. Then they want $75 for a support incident to fix it, or you wait until the next release. Maybe that's the Russians poking their fingers at us. (Trivia tidbit: Parallels, formerly SW-Soft, formerly Plesk, is Russian. The word 'Plesk' is Russian for 'Splash'.)
cPanel is certainly not my personal favorite interface. I don't find it intuitive. But it is by far the most popular, and one cannot argue with it's featureset, reliability and support base. And ultimately, it comes to a personal choice of what you like best. Other than that, it's a Ford vs Chevy argument, if you catch my meaning.
BlueOnyx is the open-sourced descendent of the old Sun Cobalt systems that runs on commodity hardware. It "just works", and it's completely free. And there are some big things in the works for the interface. When that happens, I think a lot of folks are going to question paying a monthly license fee for a control panel (as is the case with cPanel & Plesk).
Old school! Love it!baldeagle wrote:What are you guys talking about? I use ssh and vi.
But back to the topic at hand...
Keith is correct. DNS is a distributed technology, and although we (or anyone in control of DNS) can set a suggested expire time on the zones, it's ultimately up to the ISP, or if you're on a corporate network, the network admin who controls your DNS cacheing server. It's been my experience that wireless carriers tend to set their cache a bit longer in an effort to save a bit of traffic on their network. In most cases, propagation will take up to a couple hours, but there are a lot of cases where you'll see it take up to 24 hours for the cache to shake out.Keith B wrote:May just be some carriers that haven't updated yet.
In addition, the registrars can sometimes play a roll here. This is especially true when, as is the case with texaschlforum.com, the authoritative nameservers are changing. Some registrars are better than others. The company that grossed us all out last Sunday is notorious in this regard. (Well, several regards, but that one's on topic).
So hang in there, gang. If you have buddies that are still left with the old DNS cache, encourage their patience. At least it's Friday so we all have fantastic social lives and no time for the computer, right?

Re: Migration to VirtBiz Complete
Hi there. I'm Chris from the hosting company. Welcome, texaschlforum.com! Glad to have you on the network.
- cPanel
- Plesk
- BlueOnyx
We are the host datacenter for the Open Source BlueOnyx control panel project. It's my personal favorite, but there are advantages to each. The main thing is that we have chosen to support industry-standard control panels rather than one-offs or proprietary systems. If we can help out with a project, call us up (number is on our website at http://www.virtbiz.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) or fire an email to our sales at virtbiz.com address and we'll be glad to help. Past that, you won't hear from me again on the topic unless asked!
