in light of canada repealing their long gun registry, i'd say things are looking pretty good. even canada, one of the most liberal countries on the planet, has enough gun people to sway their legislature in favor of firearm owners (a billion dollars on registration didn't hurt either).
even bill clinton admitted that the assault weapons ban cost 22 members of the US legislature their seats. those guys haven't forgotten; you can't file frivolous lawsuits against gun makers anymore.
the crap in new orleans changed a lot of people's minds about owning guns. look at the skyrocket increase in CHLs there.
all but two states in the US have concealed carry laws.
in another month or so, i'm sending in my check to purchase another gun FROM MY GOVERNMENT.
the UN is weak. bush got to appoint some rather pro gun justices, and anything passed through the UN would certainly be subject to supreme court scrutiny. i'm not saying it isn't something to completely ignore, but i also don't see that it has a snowball's chance in hell of having any impact here in the states. kofi has a hard time controlling the roaming thug gangs in ghana, much less anywhere else. he's a crook.

this thing failed miserably when it was first attempted in 2001. it's not going to go anywhere. i'm picturing all these international leaders having serious discussions, while the representatives from the United States are sitting in the back playing tic-tac-toe.
imagine the number of major companies that would be impacted, jobs lost, etc. it would have a significant impact on the economy. the firearms industry is HUGE in the US. firearms, firearm accessories, gun ranges. there are tons of firearm related companies. for the guns i own, i have holsters, ammo, cleaning supplies, scopes, cabinets/safes, cases, targets, reloading supplies, you name it. a ton of companies support the firearms industry.
not to mention, there's the impossible task of trying to collect the 250 million privately owned firearms floating around in the United States. i live in the United States; a country founded on private citizens taking up arms against a government. i also happen to be a Texas native, a state in the United States where private citizens took up arms against a government. given our track record, guns aren't going away any time soon. i think there is sufficient evidence to attest to that. history was written by armed citizens; the visigoths who hid and stockpiled weapons, eventually sacking rome, the mongolians who took up arms against the chinese, the germans who took up arms against the romans in teutoburg forest...
i'm not even close to being worried.
