My understanding is that a lot of these abuses (can they really be called abuses if it is systemic, though -- more like business as usual) are based on how aggressive local and provincial governments are in enforcing national and party edicts.Gameover wrote:I can assure you that china is indeed as bad as things you may read about or in most cases worst. My wife's entire family is from china an the horror story's they tell me are mind blowing. As for the one baby law it's absolutely the real thing unless you have 10's of thousands to pay for the paper work to make the child legal. It's all about money, if you have it you can do whatever you want. If you are caught pregnant with out the correct approval papers they will take you away and take the baby out by any means necessary. I've been told stories about this happening to family members that have had it happen to them personally, imagine being strapped to a table and having your unborn child forced out of you. It sickens me to even think bout this being done but it is a reality for many who live in china.
Things may seem different when one visits China, like everything is fine and dandy but don't be fooled the government enslaves its people, steals there belonging, strips you of any property owned whenever they feel the need to use it, murders children and does little to nothing about crimes that are committed on its people.
For all the members of the family who have been able to get out of that country(never mind the outrageous amount of money you need to pay the government in order to leave) in recent years, I couldn't tell you how happy they are to now be citizens of this great nation of ours and most have said the would like nothing more then to never step foot in china again for the rest of there lives.
Haven't been to Saudi, but have been to Doha, Qatar on layovers back and forth between trekking trips to Nepal. There is a non-stop between Houston Bush and Doha which is really cool. Each time it was 110 degrees plus but not a horrible place really. We'll see about Saudi, though.RoyGBiv wrote:At least it's April and not August.Redneck_Buddha wrote:I just can't wait for my April work trip to Saudi Arabia </sarcasm>![]()

I tried to arrange my last Asia trip to take a connection (plus a 2 day layover) via Dubai. Couldn't pull off the schedule, but, would love to go just to see for myself what it's like over there.
So he could get to all these sites?VMI77 wrote:I'm not drawing an equivalence --it's way too complicated for that. I don't know anything about Catholic Mass there, but the baby girl stuff is exaggerated. My son met people who have multiple children, including baby girls. Their punishment? After the first child, the State refuses to pay for things like schooling, and they have to pay a tax. Yes, it's not fair, but people who are wealthy enough can essentially have all the children they want. Of course, they can't own guns there. Othersie, there was nothing my son wanted to do in China that he couldn't do. But yeah, he wasn't criticizing the regime either. He didn't even encounter any internet restrictions. Ironically, he met many people who seemed to have values very similar to the values of 1950's America. He also spent some time in South Korea, and found that he faced more restrictions there than he did in China. China doesn't have a TSA at airports. My son got more hassle coming home to his own country than he did entering China. China doesn't have Obamacare either. People have to pay for their own medical treatment.anygunanywhere wrote:Right. Try having baby girls or go to a real Catholic Mass and see how free you are.VMI77 wrote:anygunanywhere wrote:Obama Wants 100,000 American Students to Study in Communist China

AnygunanywhereSecretary of State Hillary (I did not know about Benghazi) Clinton on Thursday will celebrate the launch of a newly rebranded organization called the “100,000 Strong Foundation,” which aims to have 100,000 American students studying in China by 2014.
Thursday's event will "underscore the importance of study abroad in China and the benefits to our strategic relationship with China as well as the personal benefits individuals receive through these exciting experiences," the news release said.
Hey, my son studied in China, and I can assure you, he's no commie. Not that I support anything coming from the Criminal in Chief, who no doubt has ulterior motives for this proposal, but it seems like we'd want to have lots of people who can read and write Chinese. And really, today's China isn't all that much different from Obama's America, excepting perhaps it's maybe a little more free.

I'm not trying to convince anyone that China is more free or better than the US: it's not. However, we do seem to be on crossing trajectories, with China headed towards greater freedom and the US headed for less.
