All the new electronic records have the "smoking" part in them. Yes, the doctor has a code to charge for smoking cessation counseling. Any doctor can file it with Medicare and probably private insurance. You probably wouldn't know if he/she did. Just another government interference in medicine. Can't tell you if that's what happens in your wife's case.

Harumph! My wife recently went through cataract surgery. EVERY time she went in to an appointment, the first question out of their mouth was always "Do you smoke?" One of the assistants there volunteered that the question "pops up" on the screen first thing when they look up a patient's record. Well, that got me curious, and I started asking what happens to that information. Their answer was that it "just went into the system". I tried to get them to answer if it got reported somewhere (like to the government), but nobody seemed to know -- or would admit to knowing.
