This really happened. She really was a very nice lady.
What surprises me is that usually I don't think of anything useful to say until after everyone has hung up. I was listening to Sean Hannity at the time so maybe I was inspired.

I WAS JUST CALLED BY MAYORS AGAINS ILLEGAL GUNS
I happen to be home today. Normally I do not reply top any telephone solicitation or survey but for some reason I decided to talk to the nice lady on the phone.
She started by announcing that the Travis County Commissioners decided to prohibit gun shows on their property unless everyone selling/buying a gun had to have a background check, and how they are making things safer for me.
No they didn't make things safer.
What? They are stopping people from having access to illegal guns.
The guns are not really illegal. There is no law, State or Federal that requires two private individuals from buying or selling guns to do a background checks. What really is the purpose of your call?
Well, we were hoping that you would call or email them thanking them for taking a stand for our safety.
Actually, I emailed all of them BEFORE the vote urging that they refrain from this fool's errand. All they have tried to do is to use their elected offices to promote their private personal preferences rather than a useful public policy like strictly enforcing laws against using a firearm during a crime.
Well, I guess you don't want to talk to me then.
Actually, I am happy to talk to you, it is just that what you are saying is totally wrong.
Well, actually I am kind of a gun rights person myself.
Then why are you promoting this point of view?
Well it is my job.
I certainly understand that everyone needs to earn a living. There are certainly things in my job that I don't like. It must be pretty frustrating to have to promote such a point of view that you disagree with? I sure hope that you get a better job.
Oh, it is not too bad. This is just what is on my screen right now. Soon it will be something else. Thank you for your time.
OK. Goodbye, you have a lovely day.
