While I do see schools as a possible target, I don't expect it soon. First, I expect us to start seeing more one person bombs like in Israel first. I believe the war in Iraq and Afghanistan really has hurt the terrorists abilities to make a large scale coordinated attack. The stepped up security seems to also be working on that front, if the overseas news reports are to be believed.
After the public bombings start, I expect to see things like individual snipers a la John Malvo in DC.
After that, then we might see an attack on some of the infrastructure, such as at an airport or train station. But the next large coordinated attack I see will be on the highways. Consider what would happen if something brought down a major interchange such as IH-10 and Loop 410 in San Antonio or IH-35 and IH-45 in Dallas. Remember how long it takes to clear and rebuild things like that (Minneapolis is learning that part now without the terrorist help). As for the coordinated part, consider what would happen if I hit San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chicago all at once at 5:30 p.m. And that is easy to coordinate with them all in one time zone. Add another time zone and watch it really grow. I believe the terror would increase exponentially with each city added.
But I also think there may only be one big attack left in the terrorists. One reason the WTC was so bad was the shock value of it. While it was one battle won by the terrorists, it really was a bad strategic move for them, IMHO. Another attack on us of this nature would really firm up the US resolve even more. If it involves kids, it would be even worse for them in the long run. Even the democrats would be forced to take military action if a school was hit like this, I think. The public would not stand for it (or is that really wishful thinking?).
