There are at least at least two major types of LEO's that carry differently than that. The first is the group of civilian LEO's who use 1911's like I did. We carry with one in the chamber and the safety on. The second is the much larger group who carry Glocks. Compvest has a good point but doesn't go far enough. Take the age bias out too. Take the family to the range, including the kids, parents, grandparents, etc. Everyone in the house who is old enough to understand the safety rules should be familiar with the firearms. We have read in here before about young (teen-age) kids saving parents by being able to get the guns. I am sure the same applies to elderly in the house. The basic safety rule of making sure everyone who live sin the house can operate the guns is a good one.
But even more important, shooting is fun. The whole family needs to go together for some fun activities.
