I carry a pistol and spare ammo on me almost everywhere I go. I have considered buying a long gun for my truck, but I am not yet convinced it is a good idea. I don't usually carry a long gun in my patrol car, though there I can see a reason for it.

You have to do a threat analysis of your own, with what you see as threats and how likely each threat is to occur. Then you can begin your defensive planning, balancing the threats with the costs of the counter threat. The fact that I feel comfortable with just a pistol does not mean you should only carry that. It is also not a recommendation that you do carry a long gun. It is just the results of what I see as a realistic threat that might happen to me.
