Perhaps more relevant to everyday life are sections 46.02 and 46.06 of the Texas Penal Code. 46.02 makes it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to carry a handgun in a public place other than his own car or a vehicle under his control. 46.06 makes it illegal to give or sell a firearm to a person under 18 without the written permission of the parent (if a sale) or the consent (if not a sale).

I should point out that section 46.02 was ruled unconstitutional for people 18 to 21, but it is being appealed. I will also point out that 46.06 makes the giver/seller a criminal, not the minor who receives the weapon.

So, effectively, it is illegal for a person under 18 to carry a handgun other than in his car or on his own premises. But they may own the gun at home at any age if their parents consent.
