Re: 7 killed at Ft Hood shooting

I have read in a couple of different places in the last two days that Hasan fired off over a hundred rounds and reloaded either just before or as he was shot. With the 20 round mag in the FNH 5.7 that means he reloaded at least 4 times.

Re: 7 killed at Ft Hood shooting

Purplehood,

You keep talking about how difficult it would be for a CHL to take care of a gun on post. Would you be willing to undergo the type of personal screening you go through when going to court or going on a flight with correspondingly thorough vehicle searches everytime you came onto base?

Re: 7 killed at Ft Hood shooting

I have no problem with gun free zones under certain conditions one being that the party responsible for the zone ensure that it is gun free. Courts, airports, maybe military bases (they are a different world) arguably should be gun free because of the particular circumstances. Courts and airports generally go to great lengths to attain gun free status by imposing significant security screening. I have been on a couple of military bases, my son in law is a Marine, and the security at those bases was nothing like a court or an airport's security. It would be pretty easy to bring a gun on the bases I have been on, particularly if you are stationed there. So for those you who think it is too difficult to have limited numbers of people carrying concealed or otherwise, do you think it would be easier to set up screening like they do for courts and airports?

If we want gun free zones, then we should make sure they are gun free!!

Re: 7 killed at Ft Hood shooting

Purplehood,

You made some good points about whether every soldier should be required to carry 24/7. However they really do not address the issue of say CHL holders being allowed to carry on base or say officers or sargeants while on duty being required to carry.

I have always found odd the position that we can trust certain people to fly planes full of passengers or to fly warplanes, handle machine guns, artillery, etc or even be responsible for nuclear weapons but we can't trust them to carry a sidearm on on a plane or military base. BTW, I am not saying that you espouse those views Purplehood; they just seem to be common among certain elements in our society.

Re: 7 killed at Ft Hood shooting

The LEO who shot this guy and ended the shooting did a great job and is a hero. She responded within 3 minutes. Great response time. BUT, it reinforce that adage that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away!!

Re: 7 killed at Ft Hood shooting

The reality is that military bases are really soft targets like schools. Personal weapons are generally heavily restricted, and while there is security when you go on base, cars really aren't checked very often for weapons, particularly cars of soldiers stationed on the base. You end up with lots of unarmed people. So it is no wonder these guys could shoot so many before being shot down.
