SIA-
I might not have been clear enough in my statement.
I do think carrying on your person (with a round chambered) is important, but this incident does not show that to be necessary. My only disagreement was with the statement that this incident shows how important it is to carry a gun on your person. No, this incident did not show that. This incident showed how things can still come out OK in a bad situation, even if you are not carrying on your person.

Re: Off Duty HPD Shoots Man With Knife
If the other guy has a gun you might not have time to draw yours. What are the chances that you will ever need to use your gun? Now, in that statistically small % what is the chances that the incident will be one of the times that you have no prior knowledge that something is going terribly wrong?
There is risk in life. You can work to minimize it, but you have to balance it with LIFE. =)

Re: Off Duty HPD Shoots Man With Knife
Actually, wouldn't this incident be evidence that you don't need to carry on your person? Just having it available to him in his vehicle was enough, this time.surprise_i'm_armed wrote: A very troubling facet of this incident is that the LEO had to go out to his car to get his weapon.
He probably had to do that since he had disarmed while out at the nightclub with his relatives,
presumably drinking alcohol.
So in a sense he did the right thing. But it just goes to show you that ONBODY carry is critical
to being able to defend yourself/others in a timely fashion.

I don't advocate leaving your gun in the car but to say that this is evidence that you should always carry on your person is incorrect.
