Re: Gun Owner Saves Boy from Pit Bull Attack! Wait … Police

I've been a K-9 professional for years. In both the military and civilian world.
Rottie's are my favorite breed. Rico was my best one. I've owned Sheppard’s, and now a Great Dane.

Many of my friends and associates have asked me if they should get such dogs as they loved Rico and Shaddow and thought they would be great for home protection. And they are.
I tell them all the same thing. It depends on two things.

1. Your personality and ability to handle, control, and break an aggressive breeds fight drive. It's a natural drive one must control.
2. Are you willing to put in the hours of training and socialization required to be able to allow these types of dogs around other people. If not they'll just live a terrible life chained in your backyard.

I cannot tell you the number of times people have said to me, .....He's NEVER done that before! Can you help me train him not to do it again? Almost ALL Pit Bull owners will tell you how sweet their dog is. Yet more people are killed by Pit Bulls and Rottweiler’s than other breeds.

Rico, my best friend and most awesome Rottweiler was a bog love. Soooo friendly...and very gentle. It took constant training to get there. But I watched him like a Hawk! I know dog behavior and can spot a single hair starting to raise. I know the lowering of the head, the stare, the entire range of warnings a K9 gives. Most do not. A dog is an animal. Animals do things that animals do. If you do not have the time to put into training and socialization, buy one of my ankle bitters instead. I won't post my website as that may be against forum rules. but I sell small breed pups. Their great alarms and YOU can be the big dog.
