These days , one cannot tell by looking at the person externally, so to speak. Even if my intent is to say the minimum, I wouldn't want to be told later that, in the process of identifying my attacker, I described the wrong gender, and therefore don't know what I am talking about. Isn’t it more helpful to your case to say “I had to shoot a person who is dressed like a man when he tried to shoot me”? Instead of “tried to rob me”. My position would be that I feared for my life, not that I was about to be $80 less rich.
