I have to come to KLB's defense because he posted that last April 1, a few months before he was even eligible to submit his renewal. Still good advice to everyone, though, not to procrastinate. I'm also a December renewal. Submitted the renewal application and payment online July 27, and sometime after August 10 but before today (August 18) the status was changed to "mailed." So the process took somewhere between 15 and 21 days.
No matter whether DPS is responding timely or not at any given time, I don't see a reason not to renew as soon as eligible.
