Re: New West Houston Shooting Range
I just had a nice chat with Jeremy, one of the partners with Tactical Firearms, and he confirmed the info about the grand opening on October 29, the new range (complete with .50 BMG capability; yep, really...some new state-of-the-art bullet-trap system), the "shoot town," the indoor trap & skeet and sporting clays, the whole nine yards. I was correct that they also bought that 150-meter-long stretch of land to the south of the existing building, and that's where the next stages of development will occur.
The simulators they use now will also move over to the new location with 350 different available scenarios, so you'll be able to shoot laser-sim or live-fire. For the "shoot town" and two-story shoot house(s), once they qualify you for it, Simunition force-on-force classes and supervised scenarios will also be run. I bet this will be interesting to some CHLers since you normally can't get hold of Simunition rounds unless you're LEO or military, and even if you can the conversion kits and gear are expensive. I get the impression that Tactical Firearms is going to rent converted firearms, safety equipment, and sell the Simunition ammo for on-premises use. The "shoot town" will also be used for live fire drills like structure clearing (not force-on-force, in other words).
Jeremy says that, to the best of his knowledge, this will be an indoor facility unequaled in the U.S. when it's finished. He mentioned a total dollar investment number that I won't repeat--let's just say it's a very hefty amount--and to have all the stuff he described, I don't doubt it will cost every bit of it.
Now I'm all amped to see this new location open, get the new lanes operating, and see all the other additions over the coming months!
Amped, too, that it sounds like Texas will be able to lay claim to the most extensive public indoor range in the nation.

Re: New West Houston Shooting Range
An above-ground indoor range that allows .50 BMG? Wow. Seriously?
I admit I haven't seen that before. Did use a LEO range in another state where all lanes were underground and that allowed .50 BMG rounds...but I'm very happy to say I never shot next to someone throwin' that kind of metal downrange. The cost of bullet traps capable of handling .50 BMG must be absolutely astronomical. And I ain't fond of standing near a .50 BMG when it's fired outdoors; can't imagine the effect indoors. Talk about something that could throw you off your trigger control in the adjacent lane...
From the satellite image, the whole building at 1200 S. Mason looks to be almost exactly 50 meters long. Looks to be an undeveloped lot about 150 meters long immediately south of the existing building, and I'll bet that's where some new development is planned.
But you can bet I'm marking my calendar to be there for the 29th grand opening. I definitely wanna see the new place.
