Hopefully we will all say a prayer for this young guy and his family. I know that we are not as close knit as a law enforcement agency, or even just a common work place but he was one of us, in a way. This could happen to anyone. If indeed he didn't think he had a choice I'm glad he went down fighting and didn't just sit there and take a bullet. This reminds me that I need to be practicing BOTH conflict de-escelation, as well as gun grabs. I used to practice both a lot when I worked in law enforcement, and have not sense. As for not carrying one in the chamber and racking one in when you pull sorry man but that's just not good tactics. Yes it used to be the norm for the military but it's not anymore and there is a reason for that. If you don't trust the safety on your weapon it's time to get a new one. I carry a 1911, Sig SAO, as well as Glocks, and XDs all with a round in the chamber; cocked, locked and ready to rock. Your time to be able to draw, as well as fine motor skills to rack a slide upon drawing may be compromised in a shooting situation, and I would hate to see something like this happen to a fellow member here on the board because he was doing something that need not be done. Having said all that I'm saddened that the young life of an apparently honest citizen was cut short by a crook, and I hope they catch the guy and I hope he gets the death pennalty. It's a reminder though that life is terminal, but sometimes our own termination is optional.
