Re: August 2011 Applications
I'm new to this whole concealed carry business, so I don't have much experience to go on. My suggestion is to pick out what you want; if you're going to buy local, wait to get the CHL unless you have an unbelievable deal you can't pass up; if buying online, wait until you get the CHL or try to time it so you have the CHL by the time the gun arrives at your FFL for pick up. Many FFLs also have a CHL discount.Grapevinebill wrote:After all the waiting and thinking I am finding myself feeling unprepared. I really don't have a good CCW. I do have a Beretta 9mm but is it full size and really won't work IWB. I plan on adding to the collection and have been telling myself to wait till I get the plastic. But if I wait till I get the plastic, then I have to get a holster and it will be several weeks before I make the Wally Walk. With all our new walkers here maybe a suggestion could come my way on a good size .40 or 9mm and holster...
You can get by with a $10 Blackhawk nylon holster while you wait for your dream holster to come in the mail.
Here's my short list for .40 or 9mm CCW:
9mm in order of my perceived concealability:
- Kel-Tek PF9 (small, thin, cheap)
- Kahr PM9 or CM9
- Glock 26
- Springfield XDm 3.8" Compact 9mm (what I bought, currently has a mail-in for 3 extra mags)
- S&W M&P 9mm compact (I perceive it to be a little fatter than the XDm)
- Glock 19 (I'd personally buy this before I bought a G26) -- Would have been my 1st choice for a 1st 9mm, but I shoot the XDm better.
.40 in order of my perceived concealability:
- Glock 27
- Springfield XDm 3.8" Compact .40
- Glock 23 (my favorite .40 cal)

Re: August 2011 Applications
I won't bug you about pics since I haven't posted any either. I usually just make my Walmart trips on my way home from work, not on special outings with the wife.Tx_XDm wrote:Did my Wally Walk this morning
Once I was able to start carrying, I finally understood what people are talking about when they say carrying is supposed to be "comforting, not comfortable." I definitely do feel a new level of comfort that I can protect myself if anything goes awry.
And I'm also in the market for an inexpensive gun belt.

Congratulations Tx_XDm!!!! That's terrific!Tx_XDm wrote:Plastic and new holster for my XDm in hand.
36 days since DPS received packet = 26 business days to plastic in hand.
What holster did you end up with? I'm still getting used to my new MTAC for my XDm. Haven't quite found the sweet spot of where it's comfortable and my gun doesn't print.

Re: August 2011 Applications
Mine looks same way, and I already got my CHL. After they issue the CHL, the page changes to show links to update address information, etc. Those are all missing now.Tx_XDm wrote:It looks like it did after I completed the online application before the update. No nothing is showing up.

Re: August 2011 Applications
If you continue to have trouble, check with some of the people from the July 2011 Applications thread who had similar FP issues. They may have some tips to get it pushed through.

Re: August 2011 Applications
Call DPS about the fingerprints if you haven't already. If you had FP taken 7/14/11 they should have received them by now. L1/DPS had some issues with FP transfers in July, so you may need to give them a prod. Good luck.Shaolinhai wrote:Hi everybody, new to the forum here but have been reading the posts for a while. Glad to hear everyone is getting updated. Mine still stuck at "fingerprints: not received". Seeing everyone getting updated gives me hope that mine will be next.

You may want to ask this question in its own thread, but three of the most popular holsters for IWB carry are:Grapevinebill wrote:Does anyone out there have a suggestion on a good type of CC holster?

Re: August 2011 Applications
That's their standard answer for how long anything should take. I would ask them specifically whether or not they've received your fingerprints. Based on when you got them taken, they should have received them by now, and I doubt they should still be listed as under review. The BG still listed as under review is understandable.

Re: August 2011 Applications
Great weather here in Colorado! AFAIK, my house is still standing. I know of fires both N and W. I'm not looking forward to returning home to smoke-filled air.
Congrats Cat Lady.
TX_XDm, have you called DPS yet? I'm really surprised your FP are still under review. Maybe they had transfer problems from L1.

Re: August 2011 Applications
Congratulations ipscshooter, and welcome bluejay. I checked my gun on a flight from Austin to Denver on Frontier this morning without incident, except that the TSA inspector unpacked and repacked my entire suitcase in public as he hand inspected it. I'll test out reciprocity later this week.

Re: August 2011 Applications
It came with the medium back strap installed. I installed the larger back strap a couple nights ago (the pin is a pain), and the grip is a little better, but there still isn't much grip left between my fingertips and palm to get my other hand onto the grip. The more I handle it the more I get used to it though. I think it will just take a little more time and experience with it.
