SAN ANTONIO -- Lubbock police say a 5-year-old has accidentally shot his 4-year-old brother in the stomach with a handgun.

The boy was shot late Saturday. A spokeswoman at Covenant Women's and Children's Hospital says the 4-year-old was in critical condition Sunday.

Lubbock police Sgt. E. Ramirez tells the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that as of Sunday afternoon, no charges were filed and no arrests were made. But he says it's possible a guardian could be charged with making a firearm accessible to a child.

Investigators believe that when the shooting happened, the boys were home with their father.

Ramirez tells The Associated Press that the father told police he was asleep when the shooting happened.
