Other 3-Gun matches in the area are on the 2nd Saturday at WHIDPA http://www.whidpa.com/ which is at the Impact Zone west of Houston.

Also there is a 3-Gun match just south of College Station on the 4th Saturday or Sunday, you can shoot on either day. http://www.cccshooters.com/ This range is one of the nicest around. Huge facility with natural terrain to shoot on.

Starting with pistol only matches is a great place, either USPSA or IDPA. The Thunder Range is close to you and has both. 3-Gun matches are run similar to practical pistol matches as far as range commands and safety rules. Pistol matches are better to learn the ropes as you don't have the added complication of 3-guns.

Note the two matches linked to above are run by IMG rules, like most of the major 3-Gun matches you'll see on the shooting shows. The Thunder multigun match appears to be run by the IDPA DMG rules which are much more restrictive. I'm not a big fan of that set of rules as it really limits what can be done.
