My (former) Ridgeback would have done something similar. She was always looking for a way to escape and eventually we got on to all of her tricks and (successfully) prevented her from repeating her escapades. One time she got out past me and pinned the mail route person back against the house as she happily insisted on being petted. But she looked MEAN!

Penny could be real protective of me, my wife, and the other dogs in the family, even the ones she bit in the house. A friend was over and made some sort of move that Penny apparently thought was threatening, and she chased him out of the room.

Should have seen her trying to rescue me from the pool. Deathly scared of water, but if I was in it, she would come after me and try to pull me out.
