Hitler had the advantage of "the bully pulpit" as Theodore Roosevelt called it. His party was in power and they were able to create and distribute caricatures of Jews, Gypsies, and others as undesireable due to physical characteristics. This initially led to widespread support for the Nazi Party's policies, and once the bell was rung it proved to be hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube.KD5NRH wrote:I suspect some folks thought there were too many jews in Germany for Hitler to have his way, too.evil_smurf wrote:Well, regardless, I honestly seriously doubt the UN is going to get anywhere with this. There's too many republicans in this country for any ban to happen :P
The same thing could just as easily happen to gun owners should the wrong people get into power - we have already seen caricatures of gun owners as inbred bubbas and such, we have even had Mario Cuomo tell the national press that he wasn't worried about gun owners and the NRA because they were just a bunch of beer bellied drunks who shot up the woods and lied to their wives about where they were on weekends. That statement cost Mario a lot, but it serves as a good example.
All we would need is for one of the Brady bunch to get in there and arrange an agreement, like NAFTA (which is technically still a treaty but has never been treated as such) which doesn't have to be approved by congress, and the next thing we know there will be posters out showing the snaggle toothed gun owners, slobbering down their wife beater clad beer bellies, with text encouraging people to turn in their gun owning neighbors to make their neighborhood safe for the UN.
I realize that's somewhat extreme, but given the history of such things in the world . . .
