Talk about serendipity.

I am in a Best Western motel in Wichita Falls TX. About 15 minutes ago I awoke to what sounded like someone going from door to door tapping on doors. The doors all face the parking lot and the lot is pretty well lighted.

I lay and listened to the tapping for a while, considering what I would do if it came to my door, such as answer naked with a gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other, and was just about to get up to put on my jeans when I heard a series of what might be described as agonizing female screams. They were low enough in volume that they might have been fairly far away, but they were chilling.

I spent about five minutes looking out the window trying to locate the source of the sound, was it maybe a cat in heat getting her day, and then threw on jeans and a jacket and took a turn in the parking area immediately adjacent to my door, with gun holstered (man, do you know how cold kydex and a .45 against bare skin in the morning?) and a flashlight in hand and cellphone in pocket.

I found no signs that would indicate to me that something bad had gone on, so now I am back in my room, pretty cold and I know I won't get back to sleep, and wondering if I should have called the cops. The sounds I heard all could have been something else, the motel is near a highway, railroad tracks and a residential neighborhood, and I was very asleep when I heard them so I might have been making much out of nothing.

At this point I would venture that there is little or nothing to be done, but I will be bothered for a while by the thought that something might have happened.
