Did you get a chance to trade it for something?

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

Thats a bummer to hear, wish you (and I) had good copies. I wonder what it is about this model that Ruger wont take another look at? It Cleary has some issues out of the box that aren't isolated.

I used mine in the PPM at DPC yesterday after 150 flawless range rounds. I had two failures within about 65 Perfecta/Federal round nose. I was running the gun faster than I do at the range with a mix of new Sig Sauer 8 rnd mags and 1 Mecgar 8 rnd mag so I didn't get to stop to analyze the failures.

I polished a couple more rough edges on the barrel throat and will try again when my ammo order arrives. Im not giving up on this one yet but, I sure wish it was problem free. I'm over 500 rounds on it now, it should be running better than it is.

another 100 quick rounds and double taps through mine, not a single hiccup. I now move this over to my EDC.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

I agree. It was very obvious what the issue was once I inspected the cartridges and looked at the barrel, the right side had a very hard edge with no polishing or beveling where the left side tapered off with a mirror finish all the way around.

Since it was an obvious issue, I decided to fix it myself rather than deal with sending it off and waiting.

For a model thats been around a while, and a design thats been around a century, these QA issues should not exist from a top tier manufacturer.

That being said, I love how this gun (1911) runs and will be shopping around for another, 5 inch possibly this time. Considering rock island, Remington, or a Springfield. I really like how much customization can go into one, I've already added a Wilson Combat extended slide release and MagPul grips, have a Bianchi carrylok owb holster as well. Looking to add nightsights soon.

Despite the issues with my first 1911, the 1911 bug still bit me. Ill keep a polymer or two, but 1911 just feels right.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

Happy to report I had no hiccups today with either mec gar or factory mags. I polished and beveled out the right side and every round feed like a champ.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

Can you take a look at the barrel throat ramp/beveling? On mine, the left side tapers off nice and smooth all the way up the left side. On the right side where my cartridges catch and damage, the beveling stops abruptly to a hard edge.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

This was my first one. Overall im very happy with it. If the MecGar mags feed consitently, ill stick with it. Im actually about to order another 1911, ive been bit.

As a younger feller, my first guns were polymer semi autos, you get used to shooting them and think all guns feel and behave the same. A 1911 is a bit different. The trigger design for one, the trigger doesnt arc/pivot when you pull it, it pulls straight back. Clean, crisp, short reset. I waited a long while to get one, im happy i did. Dont let this thread be a deterrent, there are MANY manufactures, models, trims, parts, custom parts, sizes etc... the hardest part is deciding on just one.

I still have my XD service 9mm and a Taurus G2, so polymer is still in the family, but the 1911 is just different.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

I just got back from the 2nd trip to the range. Ran 100 Freedom munitions FMJ 230gr this time, i had 3 fail to feed/battery right off the bat. Same way and same damage to the cartridge, it almost seems like the bullet is popping up and to the right, possible extractor issue?

I then noticed the issue only happened with my factory ruger mags, i used the MecGar 8 round SS only for the last 80 rounds or so and didnt have a single issue.

I will email ruger about the mags but will probably order more MecGar 8 rnd SS mags.

Just 50, only had time for one box at lunch. ill run a hundre or so this weekend.

Feeding issue aside, the gun shoots and feels fantastic, i punched the 10 ring out with 20 rounds, no flyers.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

Wish i had good news to report, but after 50 rounds mixed of hornady hollow, freedom munitions hollow, and Perfecta FMJ, I had about 8 failure to feed/battery. Happened with both of the 7 rounders and the 8 round mec gar.

Didnt happen with the 1st round, but the 2nd to last and last rounds. Seems the cartridge gets hung on the top of the barrel throat. I didnt have time to run more ammo through it but ill give it another clean and a go this weekend.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

Picked my lightweight commander up tonight. Cleaned it, it has manually cycled every round so far with both factory mags and the one mec gar I have. I'll shoot it tomorrow or this weekend.

Is yours all steel or lightweight model?

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

I just ordered a Ruger lightweight commander, my first 1911. Hope I get a good one. I watched the Hickok45 YouTube review on it and he had a very similar, if not the same, failure with his. He had about 100 loaded mags though and it was hard to tell if they were mag specific or not, toward the end of the video the gun seemed to run fine. I ordered mine with 1 extra mecgar 8 rounder to go with the 2 factory 7s. Good luck, I'll report back when I get mine and get a chance to run some through it.
