Re: What's causing American obesity and cardiovascular disease?
Reviving this old thread to say thanks to those that posted the information and resources regarding more recent nutritional information and studies. In a large part due to this thread, on August 27, I switch to a low carb high fat whole food diet. I eat no grains, rice, processed food and definitely no added sugar. I am down 47 pounds since August and 77 pounds from my highest.
The key that I was missing was the high fat and whole foods. I was always trying a low carb low fat diet. I would lose a little and then stall. Now I am losing and believe this way of eating is sustainable for the long term. I very seldom feel hungry and have no cravings. I plan to start a HIIT program soon and that should speed up the fat burning some.
Thanks!

Re: What's causing American obesity and cardiovascular disease?
It wasn't covered by insurance when I had mine done. I figured, for the price of a nice dinner for my wife and I, it would be a good investment. Not sure if it's covered now or not. Crazy if not. It's amazing how much more necessary and common testa, procedures and treatments become once insurance starts paying for them.

Re: What's causing American obesity and cardiovascular disease?
Tracker, the calcium scan is what saved my life 15 years ago. A new heart hospital had opened across the freeway from my office. My assistant came in one day and told me she was concerned about my health because I had become fatigued and grumpy all the time and not very likeable. She told me she heard on the radio about a special the new hospital was running on a new test called a calcium scan. She said it was a $100 and took less than thirty minutes. I had the scan done and the technician wouldn't let me leave. He called in a doctor that reviewed my results and told me to go straight to my cardiologist's office. I did what they told me and a couple days later I had an angiogram done. They found my "widowmaker" artery 90% blocked. I credit God, my assistant, the calcium scan and the cardiologist for saving my life.
I forgot to mention, I had had 3 false negative nuclear stress tests over the previous 2 years.

Just joking and envious.

Re: What's causing American obesity and cardiovascular disease?
Carlson,
Except for the whole grains and fruit, I've been eating pretty much the same things as you. However, not the same ratio of each. I'm tweaking mine to something closer to what you are doing.
My never list is the similar to yours with the exception of a Whataburger every once in a while.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: What's causing American obesity and cardiovascular disease?
Thought it would fun to revive an old thread. I lost about 10 pounds and then stalled eating a very low carb diet. Now I am frustrated and considering reintroducing some minimally processed whole grain foods and fruits.
I also just saw this and thought some of you nutrition focused folks might enjoy it.

Re: What's causing American obesity and cardiovascular disease?
Well, due to this thread, I've gotten serious about changing my eating habits. Early in the year I changed to more of a whole foods diet avoiding sugar and flour with the exception of whole grain bread, pasta and crackers. After reading this thread and studying more of the work of the people featured in the videos, I changed to a low carb high fat diet about three weeks ago. The first couple of weeks I didn't lose any weight, felt terrible like I had the flu and experienced severe leg cramps that wouldn't go away. Even though I wasn't losing weight according to the scale during that period, I could tell something was going on as my pants felt different.
My body finally adjusted and in the last week, I've dropped almost five pounds, moved to a smaller notch on my belt and feel much more energetic and mentally sharper. I also experience almost no hunger, even when it's time to eat. Therefore, I am eating less and feeling complete satisfied.
Looking forward to continuing with the change. Thanks to those that posted here.

This is the third video of a three video series. She talks about how willpower alone is not enough for long term weight loss and maintenance.

TXBO wrote:Everyone has a different metabolism and means everyone has a different limit of daily carbs to avoid gaining weight. If you want to find your limit. Pick up some Ketostix at the drug store. Cut out almost all of your carbs until you go into ketosis. Once in ketosis, slowly add back carbs to your diet until you are no longer in ketisis. Back off just enough to get back in ketosis and now you know you limit.mojo84 wrote:Looks like I need to keep licking.AndyC wrote:So, mojo, how much did ya lose? :)
In all seriousness, I can see the point he and others are making. I am still trying to confirm the veracity of it and if it's right for me. I fit the guy's profile and have eliminated probably 80% of the flour and sugar from my diet. I still eat fruit, sweet potatoes, legumes and brown rice occassionally. Apparently, that's not strict enough.
Yeah, it seems that I can't eat any carbs. I was only eating a slice of whole grain orawheat bread with breakfast. I also would cheat and eat a bit of rice and corn occassionally. The only potatoes I eat are sweet potatoes. No sugar.
